About the Author

imageHi, I'm Karina - mother, educator, student, friend.  I am also a passionate advocate for children who have Autism and their families.  The paradigm needs to change as to how we deal with the autism enigma and when we understand it, embrace it and even learn from it, then we will be irrevocably changed!

We Really don’t know anything at all.

We are born but, don’t remember.

We grow but, don’t know any better.

As children we have to be taught.

As teens we have to experience.

As adults we have to know better.

I believe we know everything when we are born

but, lose insight on life.

We lose memory as we grow older, like a disease.

We lose meaning, we believe in what we are taught.

We know less and less but are taught more and more.

But, we really don’t know anything at all.

A friend of mine and I were talking about whether free will exists or not at a coffee house on Haight and Masonic in San Francisco. He was leaning towards "no." So I said, "it does, but most people aren't exercising it." Most people are not exercising their free will because their choices, behaviors, etc. are dedicated by many factors. For instance, if you chose coffee over beer, I'd ask you, "why did you choose coffee over beer?" You might say something like, "I chose coffee because I wanted it." In this case, your desire made the choice, not you. So I'd ask you again, "why did you choose coffee over beer?" You might say something like, "I chose coffee because I like the taste of coffee better than beer." Your preference made the choice, not you, this time. So I'd ask you again, "why did you choose coffee over beer?" You might say something like, "I chose coffee because it's healthier." Here, your reasoning made the choice. Of course, this can go on and on and go. As you can see, or maybe not, desires, preferences, reasons, etc. are making choices.

Our thoughts, our words, our actions and our surroundings (people, environment, sound, visual, textile, etc.) correlate with our state of being. Therefore, we must think, speak, act and choose surroundings that generate the state of being we want to experience. For example, being peaceful is my highest state of being. Right after I woke up today, I meditated for thirty minutes, chanted "om" for eleven minutes and stretched. Then I made a mental list of positive aspects of myself and life and a mental list of people, places and things I am thankful for being a part of my experience. (I continued to think and speak positively by focusing on positive side of everyone and everything and acknowledging my appreciation of everyone and everything I interacted with throughout the day.)

Now that 2011 is coming into completion, it is important to reflect on the lessons you've learned and the insights you've gained. It is also important to recall positive aspects of 2011 and cultivate appreciation for those positive aspects you have experienced. Next, quiet your mind and your heart by taking a few deep breaths in through your nose and mouth and ask yourself who you want to be, what you want to do and what you to have (or experience) in your life, in your individual reality. Visualize and feel like you already have them.
